Everybody that Actually Needs to Know You’re Moving: Must have Checklist
Marshall Heights, Washington DC - While you’re preoccupied with the daunting task of relocating, the most minute details may elude you. It is easy to forget about informing relevant parties as well as companies you’re affiliated with about your impending address.
Notifying specific organizations and individuals of your relocation is paramount to ensure a seamless moving process and preventing unwarranted hassles and troubles with your mail and active accounts.
Family and friends
Let’s be real with ourselves, family and friends are the first persons to know when we’re relocating. More than likely you’ve driven them by the house or they were with you during the home buying process. Informing them of your relocation as early as possible will get them prepared to help you move and if you’re moving out of the area, time to say goodbye.
Some of you may be highly excited to tell your landlord that you’re leaving and others may want to withhold that information because how the relationship was with them; on the flip side the relationship may have been great. You must carefully review your rental contract to determine your responsibilities. Generally you must give a 30 days notice with intent to vacate. Provide your move-out date as well as the future address.
If you are not moving outside of your current city, you should notify your Human Resources department of your new address for record purposes. If you decide to move outside of your current city, and advance notice for a replacement is warranted.
Doing a change of address card can temporarily redirect your mail from your previous address to your new one. But as I stated earlier it’s temporary, once the post office stops redirecting your mail it can be returned to the sender and create a headache depending on the sender.
It’s pertinent to reach out to the DMV, government agencies, financial institutions, insurance companies, medical and educational facilities. Your subscription services and clubs have to be notified as well.
